Over 160,000 people have signed a petition from a progressive organization denouncing Sen. Charles Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) opposition to the Iran nuclear agreement.
“New York Senator Chuck Schumer just publicly declared that he will vote to kill the historic Iran nuclear peace deal and urge other Democrats in the Senate to do the same,” the petition, issued by CREDO Action, begins.
“There’s no excuse for any Democrat to oppose the deal – least of all Senator Schumer, who is in line to take over leadership of the Senate Democrats once Senator Harry Reid retires.
“Chuck Schumer was wrong on Iraq when he voted for war and he is wrong on Iran,” the petition continues. “Schumer’s decision to join Republicans in attempting to sabotage the Iran nuclear deal once again shows that he is unfit to lead Senate Democrats.
Tell Sen. Chuck Schumer: Don’t lead Senate Democrats to war with Iran,” it adds.
Schumer announced last week that he would oppose the nuclear deal with Iran, delivering a blow to the administration’s effort to rally Democratic senators.
The decision sparked anger among liberal groups, with others, including MoveOn.org, pouncing on Schumer, who is poised to be the next Democratic Senate leader.
Schumer defended his decision, writing in an Aug. 6 post on Medium that “Advocates on both sides have strong cases for their point of view that cannot simply be dismissed.
“This has made evaluating the agreement a difficult and deliberate endeavor, and after deep study, careful thought and considerable soul-searching, I have decided that I must oppose the agreement and will vote yes on a motion of disapproval.”
Meanwhile Sen. Ted Cruz was among those criticizing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer after he was captured dancing backstage at a concert in a video that quickly went viral.
Some soon took to Twitter to excoriate Schumer for dancing at a concert instead of working on combatting the multiple crises facing the county, with Cruz writing: “Celebrating the demise of the Republic….”
“10,000 plus Americans are stranded in Afghanistan, surrounded by the enemy & desperate for help & this is what Senate Majority Leader @chuckschumer is doing,” wrote Sean Parnell. “Dancing in the street with celebrities. Just so tone deaf & embarrassing for our nation.” he added
Schumer attended the “We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert” in Central Park on Saturday.
Bill Neidhardt, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s press secretary, took to Twitter with a short clip showing the New York senator dancing merrily with late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert.
