Chelsea handed Antoine Griezmann transfer boost amid Saul Niguez swap rumours

Antoine Griezmann was reportedly unaware of negotiations between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid regarding his future.

Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this week that Barca and Atleti were in ‘advanced talks’ over a swap deal involving two apparent Chelsea targets, Griezmann and Saul Niguez.

According to RMC Sport, the Barcelona forward has not made a departure from Ronald Koeman’s side an ‘obsession’ this summer, but a transfer away from the Nou Camp remains possible.

The report claims that Griezmann ‘did not really appreciate’ talks between the two La Liga giants taking place without him knowing, with the former Atleti man having no real desire to leave Barca at the moment.

If the Frenchman did become annoyed by his lack of knowledge as to what was happening behind the scenes, that could put him off making a return to the Spanish capital – which could spell good news for Chelsea.

Griezmann, 30, is currently contracted to Barcelona for another three years, with the Catalan club keen to offload him due to his wage bill, reports claim.

The France attacker joined Barca in 2019 from Atletico for around €120million (£102m), but his club are currently suffering a financial crisis – meaning some star players could be offloaded to balance the books this summer.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Griezmann, as well as Saul, as Thomas Tuchel looks to bolster his options ahead of his first full season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud are expected to leave west London in the coming weeks, or days for the latter of the two, meaning Tuchel wants to bring in a striker for extra firepower.

Griezmann can play on either wing, as well as through the middle – similarly to Timo Werner.

Saul, meanwhile, is being targeted to accompany the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho as Tuchel’s first-choice central midfield options.
