Manchester United and Chelsea have been told they have missed out on Ben White this summer.
It comes as the English international is preparing to leave Brighton in a £ 50m deal agreed with Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta is spraying the cash this summer and has already signed two players in the form of Nuno Tavares and Albert Sangi Lokonga.
But one area that the Spaniard has been desperate to strengthen is in defense, with White being his top target.
After David Luiz’s departure, it has left Arsenal light in their backline, while the Englishman has been chased by some of the biggest teams in the Premier League.
And former Liverpool star Danny Murphy believes people like United and Chelsea have missed a trick by not landing the 23-year-old.
“Ultimately, as a player, you can only make a decision based on the opportunity in front of you,” he told talkSPORT.
“If I’m Ben White, I’m going to Arsenal because they’re following me and it’s a step up, it’s a huge club.
“Yes, it’s a risk in terms of whether they will advance from last season, and can Mikel Arteta improve that team? But of course he has sold it to him and he feels wanted.
“It’s a massive opportunity because he plays every week, it’s a good environment to play your football and a better environment than Brighton.
“Is it a progression in his career? Yes, it is. It’s easy to look at last season and think Arsenal will not be competitive. But they can get into the top-four next season.
“You can only move to a club that wants you. I agree that his quality and potential is really good and I’m surprised Manchester United or Chelsea have not come in for him.”
After finishing eighth in the Premier League, Arsenal are without European football for the first time in 25 years.
But that hasn’t stopped Arteta from revising her team with more players being sent out.
William Saliba and Matteo Guendouzi have also gone on loan to Marseille this summer, while people like Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira are ready to depart.
The Gunners are eager to revive their interest in Lyon star Houssem Aouar, but they are facing a battle to sign the midfielder.
United, Tottenham and Liverpool are also keen on the French international – who has been priced at £ 25m.
