Brandon Williams may not be the first-choice left-back at Manchester United right now, but he’s certainly warming the hearts of the fans with his performances in training.
The young defender came through the academy setup and made his debut under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in 2019, but last season he struggled for minutes in either full-back position thanks to the form of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw.
Williams has been linked with a move away once again the summer, with Southampton at the head of the queue, but with a deal yet to materialise between the two clubs the 20-year-old is currently training with the first-team squad as they prepare for the new season.
posted a clip of the squad training, minus the stars from the Euro 2020 and Copa America competitions who are still on holiday, and one clip in particular caught the attention of the fans who were watching.
In the clip, Williams and academy striker Joe Hugill are seen chasing the ball in a foot race before Williams steps across and shoulder barges Hugill to the ground. The two players tussle for the ball, before Williams gets up first with the ball and plays a simple pass out to Mason Greenwood.
The moment showed an aggressiveness and competitiveness that Williams has sometimes been accused of lacking in games, which has often seen him targeted by the opposition in attack when he plays.
With Shaw not present for pre-season currently, Williams is likely to get minutes during pre-season alongside Wan-Bissaka and Alex Telles.
United’s first pre-season fixture comes on Sunday afternoon when they take on Wayne Rooney’s Derby County, with the game kicking off at 13:00 BST.
