Why Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial are training at Carrington instead of Manchester United pre-season camp

Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial are training together at Carrington this week as they prepare to join up with the rest of the Manchester United squad on Monday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken a 27-man squad to a training camp at Pennyhill Park in Surrey this week and Van de Beek and Martial are only set to join in with group training in pre-season next week.

But the duo are at Carrington this week and are working under the supervision of medical and fitness staff as they prepare to link up with the squad for full pre-season training on July 26.

Both players have recently returned from injury and are working at Carrington to build their fitness up ahead of next week. They could be available to feature in the pre-season friendly against Brentford at Old Trafford next Wednesday (July 28) or at Preston the following Saturday (July 31).

Martial hasn’t played since suffering a knee injury on international duty in March. While Solskjaer expressed hope in May that he would return to play a part in United’s final two Premier League games of the season he remained absent and wasn’t fit enough to be included in France’s squad for the European Championship.

Van de Beek was forced to pull out of the Netherlands’ 26-man squad for Euro 2020 with a groin injury, but he is now fully fit and ready for pre-season.

Speaking after United began their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 win at Derby County on Sunday, Solskjaer confirmed the duo would report to training with the rest of the group next week, to be followed a week later by Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

The 25-year-old had a disappointing campaign last season, scoring only twice in his final 19 appearances, both of which came late on in a 9-0 win over Southampton, and he lost his place at centre forward to Edinson Cavani.

“They’re not ready yet,” Solskjaer said of Martial and Van de Beek. “They’ll probably be 100 per cent training with us a week on Monday. They’re still working hard to step into the group.

“Fernandes and Pogba? It won’t be next week, no. The week after.”

United’s 27-man squad will continue to train at Pennyhill Park – the base for England’s rugby union team – for the rest of the week ahead of a friendly with Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Saturday (3pm).
